Thoughts on turning 21.

I remember still how it felt to become of legal age. I felt pretty smug about being “all grown up.” That was more than just a few years go and here I am all these years later celebrating turning 21 all over again. It’s hard to believe it was that long ago that I opened the first Craters & Freighters business. What’s even harder to believe is that this time I don’t have that “all grow up” feeling at all.

Looking back over the 21 years that Craters & Freighters has evolved we could feel pretty smug about “reaching legal age” and that we’ve learned everything about specialty freight shipping there is to know. In reality what we’ve learned is that this is an ever changing, ever evolving industry and the challenges that were present way back in June of 1990 have changed drastically but still exist and it’s still exciting to discover the means to take the company yet again to the next level. Sure, we have 67 locations around the country and we’re America’s leading brand for specialty packing and shipping, but in many ways it feels like we’re still in our youth.

This past year we embarked on some new strategies for growth and already in 2011 we’re experiencing our first significant growth since the recession set in. We’ve identified a market that needs us now more than ever simply because the population is growing up – estate shipping. As my Baby Boomer friends know, it’s that time of life that many of us are facing when all those treasures our parents had need to be sold or shipped off to relatives. So we have responded by introducing our professional estate shipping service that includes sorting and packing and crating and shipping to wherever things need to go, whether one place or many. And because we’ve been safely shipping very expensive art and treasured antiques for 20 years, people know their family heirlooms will arrive safely too.

We have other exciting new initiatives in the works for later this year and into 2012 that have given everyone here that youthful bounce in their step. It’s kind of like turning 21 has turned us on to a whole new era. But, one thing remains the same: If it’s too big, too heavy or too valuable for anyone else, it’s just right for Craters & Freighters. And we have 20 years under our belts to prove it. I hope you’ll join me in a toast to celebrate out 21st birthday!

Cheers,
Diane Gibson
